Description

A winged figure with horns sits atop this handsome Bambara mask. Her swollen abdomen alludes to pregnancy, and hence, to fertility. The Bambara live in the region around Bamako, the capital of Mali. Their traditions include six male societies – Ntomo, Komo, Kono, Tyiwara, Kore, and Nama – each with its own type of mask, worn to display their status in society. This is a Kore mask; concerned with the sky and with the bringing of rain to make the crops grow, the Kore employ masks representing the hyena, lion, monkey, antelope and horse.
